"Akon is a hip-hop and R&B singer. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, but grew up in Senegal and at the age of 7 he moved back to the US, settling in New Jersey. He is the son of jazz percussionist Mor Thiam and is fluent in his native language of French as well as English"


After an early life of crime, Akon started to concentrate seriously on his music.
His first album Trouble, release in 2004, was a fusion of african style vocals alonside East coast beats. Many of the songs reflect experiences of his troubled youth and contain an interesting blend of African style vocals mixed up with rap, hiphop and ragga style beats.
Many think his strength is in soulful R+B songs with his unique voice giving an edge to the songs, but he is also acclaimed for his rapping ability.
The debut album included the singles Lonely , Locked Up, Belly Dancer, Pot of Gold and Ghetto. Lonely was one of the biggest videos of the year.
Akon's 2nd album, Konvicted was release in November, 2006. Konvicted included collaborations with Snoop Dogg, Brick and Lace, and Styles P.
The first single from the album "Smack That" features Eminem.
